Traditional Māori Weaving Workshop in Taupō
Discover the art of raranga (Māori weaving) in a meaningful, hands-on cultural workshop that keeps traditional weaving knowledge alive. Māori weaving is both creative and practical, deeply connected to identity, community, and the natural world.
Learn about harakeke (New Zealand flax) — a treasured resource traditionally used for carrying food, clothing, binding waka, and medicinal purposes. Because of its importance, harvesting follows strict tikanga (cultural protocols), which you will be guided through with respect and understanding.
During this 3-hour weaving workshop, you will create your own small kete (basket) and dye it to take home as a taonga (treasure) — a special reminder of your connection to Māori culture and traditional skills.
This workshop is suitable for visitors, students, and groups seeking an authentic cultural learning experience in Taupō.

Pōwhiri & Māori Cultural Performances for Events and Conferences – Taupō
A Pōwhiri is the traditional Māori welcome, grounded in tikanga and the protocols of formally receiving manuhiri onto our whenua. As tangata whenua (people of the land), The Haka Shop Taupō is honoured to welcome delegates, speakers, and guests to your conference or event.
Our pōwhiri and cultural performances provide more than an introduction — they set the tone. Through authentic expression, storytelling, and performance, we create a welcoming atmosphere that is engaging, respectful, and memorable, leaving guests confident they have experienced Māori culture in a meaningful and appropriate way.
When we perform, we are genuine. Our presence carries ihi — the energy and magnetism that connects people to place, purpose, and each other. Each performance is delivered with professionalism and tailored to suit your event format, audience, and venue.
We are available to travel to your conference location and work alongside organisers to ensure a seamless and culturally appropriate experience.
Contact The Haka Shop Taupō to arrange a pōwhiri or Māori cultural performance for your next conference or corporate event.
